Fossil Fly: A fossil fly on an about 2.7 inch square plaque. These fossils have been subject to some debate here. The body impressions resemble that of bees (Order Hymenoptera.) Bees however have two pairs of wings. We don't see evidence of a second, smaller set of wings in these fossil impressions so our identification remains Order Diptera. Exact identification is not possible but the specimen resembles Plecia peali (march fly) the most common insect fossil found in the Fossil Lake strata.
